BOTTLE OF HARD WORK

Mark my words. You’ll fail unless you do it. «Jim shook his head. «I can’t. It wouldn’t be right.»

The meat cutter sighed. «Look, you bought this butcher store. Don’t you want it to thrive?»

«Yes.»

«Well, the man who owned it before you always gave a bottle of whiskey with each order from the chief cook at the hotel. In return, he bought all his meats here. Stop giving him his weekly bottle, and he’ll stop purchasing from us. We’ll go out of business.»

Jim lifted his chin. «It’s against my Christian principles to give away whiskey to stay in business. I’d rather give away a bottle of hard work!»

The meat cutter was right. When the flow of liquor stopped, so did the orders. The shop folded. Years later, in 1924, Jim opened a dry-goods store in Hamilton, Missouri, the town where he’d grown up. The meat-cutter hadn’t been totally correct, because the store he opened was his five hundredth! Jim had kept his bottles full of hard work and had made it big by giving people an honest deal, not whiskey. You probably sleep on sheets purchased at Jim’s store, or wear clothes from one of his retail outlets.

He stayed true to what he believed, never drinking a drop of liquor and providing good service to his customers.

In this day and age of hostile takeovers and corporate under-the-table deal making, actions that sometimes leave customers and employees out in the cold, it seems there’s a lot to be learned from the man who wouldn’t alter his principles—J. C. Penney.
