«Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see» (Hebrews 11:1, NLT).
I was looking for a new job and trying to deal with the anxiety of waiting. Although it is never a good time to lose your job, my problem was made worse during the coronavirus quarantine, which brought about a great financial crisis. One day, I was standing in the hallway of my house when I felt God was telling me: «If I told you I had already taken care of your job, would you relax?» Without even realizing what I was doing, I thought: Yes! But tell me what it will be. My friend Anne and I laughed quite a bit when, days later, I told her about my conversation with God. It is so hard to surrender the idol of certainty!
Friar Richard Rohr writes, «If we journeyed back to the first one thousand three hundred years of Christianity, faith was defined in those days as a combination of knowing and not knowing. A disposition . . to live with a certain degree of ignorance. Now, that we have discarded that image, people have the impression they have the right to have absolute certainty and clarity for each step of the way.» Obviously, when we have absolute certainty and clarity, we do not need faith.
I have enough information, enough light for today. God is faithful. When I need to know more, He will reveal it to me. I do not need more power, more control, or more information. What I really need is more faith. But my faith will not increase unless I go through the darkness of uncertainty. It is here, at night, that my senses are sharpened. is here where I learn to distinguish God’s voice more clearly, because I cannot trust my vision. It is here where I hold on to His hand more firmly and allow myself to be led more easily.
It is said that General José de San Martin used mules to cross the Andes mountains. Tradition goes that, in the most difficult parts of the crossing, in the most dangerous cliffs, they would blindfold the mules’ eyes so they would not be scared. Perhaps God, in His mercy, is blindfolding our eyes as He leads us to higher altitudes.
Dear Lord, even though I do not see where You are leading me,
I want to trust in You with my whole heart.
You make my feet like the feet of deer, to remain firm on high places (2 Samuel 22:34).
Even if I stumble, I will not fall, because You lead me by the hand (Psalm 37:24).
