«We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!»
(Numbers 13:33, NLT).
Years ago, I prayed, «Lord, I feel as if fear is taking up almost all the space in my heart. If my heart were like this room (l was sitting in my dining room when I said that), I feel I would be curled up in a corner, with my back against the wall and without any room to back up. I don’t want to go on this way! I want to win back territory and cast fear out of my life.» I had no idea how God would answer my prayer. Now, years later, it seems like the most logical thing that God sent me a series of challenges, each bigger than the previous one. The only way to dislodge fear, the terrible tenant who not only does not pay, but also destroys our heart, is to face the giants. The only way to conquer—or win back—the Promised Land, is to face the circumstances and people who make us feel like little grasshoppers.
In his article «Giants in the Promised Land,» Christian author Graham Cooke says that not only is it good for giants to be in the Promised Land, but also absolutely necessary. The trials we have to face are designed to be a doorway, a passport to our future. «There are always giants next to a promise, because you need them. God’s promises are so big that you have to get bigger in order to carry the weight,» writes Graham. When we see giants, we think we will never be able to defeat them, that they will crush us like cockroaches. «But the Holy Spirit gives you this message, ‘See that giant? That giant is what I am making you into. When I bring that giant against you I am going to make you that size, and in the conflict you are going to become that size, and he is going to become your present size.» The giant we face has to be much bigger and stronger than us, because only then will be able to grow.
When we face challenges, we pass on to the next level (like in a video game). Then, we are given opportunities and blessings that belonged to us in Christ from the beginning, but that our small frame would not have been able to bear.
Lord, thank You for the giants standing beside each promise.
Thank You for the challenges that make me grow. Today, as I face them, I will remember that
You are transforming me into a real giant of faith.
