“For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also.” LUKE 12:34, NIV
A few years ago I filmed a video in Bakersfield, California, at the Kern River Oil Field. Oil is also known as “crude oil” or “petroleum,” and it’s made from algae and tiny marine creatures called zooplankton buried in layers under the surface. Evolution-believing scientists think these living things were buried there millions of year ago, but since I believe the Bible is God’s word, I’m aware the when we see living things that were buried underground in layers, it’s probably related to the Flood described in Genesis, which uprooted and buried all kinds of living things all over the world. The layers of hills fit perfectly with what we see in nature today.
In Bakersfield, there is a neat overlook at the field that allowed me to see the entire oil field. It’s the fifth largest oilfield in the United States with more than nine thousand wells!
After finishing there, we went to the California coast Huntington Beach to film. We went because about a mile into the ocean, several giant oil platforms are visible; they are drilling for oil under the bottom of the sea floor. Oil has become an incredibly important resource in the world. Ninety percent of the vehicles in the world run on some sort of oil product, and many homes are heated by oil.
Since oil is buried in the ground, it’s really like a buried treasure! Treasure sounds great, but it can be very dangerous for our spiritual life. Our verse today reminds us that our heart is always with the things we treasure, but you have to ask yourself where that is. It’s ok to like certain things, but don’t let them consume your heart and all your attention. Make sure God has the spot in the center of your heart.
