Ten-year-old Alex sat watching the builders working on his dad’s new garage. They had poured the foundation the day before and were now cementing large cinder blocks into place. Suddenly the boy saw a small bird land atop the unfinished wall and then drop out of sight. At that moment a workman carried a freshly prepared block to the spot, ready to slip it into place.
«Stop!» Alex called. «There’s a bird in the wall!»
«What are you talking about, kid?» the man responded.
The two peered down between the freshly laid cinder blocks. Sure enough, a baby robin sat looking up at them from the foundation.
«Hey, Hank,» the workman called. «See if you can reach down here and pull out this bird. My arm’s too thick.» But Hank’s arm was too broad to fit between the blocks too. Alex tried, but his arm was too short.
«Guess we’ll just have to leave him there,» the workman announced.
«No!» Alex blurted. «He’ll die.»
Everyone was standing around trying to come up with a solution when Alex brightened. «Sand,» he gasped. «Please bring me some sand.» As the block layers watched, he carefully poured sand down the hole. The grains washed over the feathers of the baby bird and began forming a pile at its feet. Ever so slowly, the pile grew higher and higher as the bird lifted its legs to keep from being buried. In about an hour Alex was able to reach down and retrieve the helpless creature and return it to its mother.
Hey, grown-ups don’t always have all the answers!
