BEING HUMBLE

«A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor»  (Proverbs 29:23).

IT WAS a Friday night when Rupert decided not to talk any more except for extremely important things. He made this strange decision because he could no longer bear dealing with people. For him, people only brought him problems. He came to believe that everyone was less than he, and attacked with crude words those with whom he interacted. Rupert was an extremely proud man. And he is not the only one. Many souls are trapped in a world of disease because of pride. Proud, self-centered people want everything, know everything, own everything; they are perfect in their own opinion. Jesus has no room in their lives.

The Bible story presents us with a man of this type: proud, self-centered, and arrogant. He did not want to reverence the God of heaven and earth because he saw himself as the only sovereign worthy of praise. For all these reasons, Nebuchadnezzar had to suffer the humiliation Proverbs 29:23 speaks about: «A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.”

The divine command was executed: «They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses» (Daniel 4:25). Can you imagine a well-known king, whose power had been admired throughout the confines of the earth, transformed into a beast of the field? How is it possible for someone with such greatness and power to end up like this?

How are your pride, arrogance, self-centeredness, and self-sufficiency? Do you believe that your pride could lead you to such a situation? Let us hope not. Let us hope that you remember every morning about the importance of subduing pride, and that you reconsider things as the king of Babylon did: «Now l, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down» (Daniel 4:37).

»The person who boasts should boast in the Lord. It is not the person who commends himself who is approved, but the person whom the Lord commends» (2 Corinthians 10:17, 18, ISV).
