TIM KELLER, the well-known American pastor and writer, once sat in on a conversation between R. C. Sproul and J. Alec Motyer, the renowned Old Testament scholar. Sproul was speaking to a group of theology students about the relationship between the Old and New Testaments when Dr. Motyer told him, «Here’s what an Israelite would say: If you said, ‘Who are you?’ he would say, I l was in a foreign land under the sentence of death, in bondage, but I took shelter under the blood of the lamb. Our mediator let us out, and we crossed over, and now we’re on our way to the Promised Land. We’re not there yet, but he’s given us His law to make us a community. And He’s given us the Tabernacle because you have to live by grace and forgiveness. And His presence is in our midst, and He’s going to stay with us until we get home.’ » Then Motyer added, «That’s exactly what the Christian says—almost word for word.»*
Moses understood this, and that’s why he told Israel, «The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath He swore to your ancestors that He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt» (Deuteronomy 7:7-9, NIV).
God literally «got attached» to Israel. His people’s deliverance was an act of grace; their journey to Canaan was an act of grace; and their entrance into the Promised Land was an act of grace. It all happened without any merits on the Israelites’ part. The merit lay in a God who did not fail to keep what He had promised.
Like He did in the past with Israel, the Lord will use His power to deliver us today from Satan’s power and set us on the path that leads to heaven. And He will do so, not because there is any virtue in us, but because He loves us, and He will keep His oath.
We might be small and insignificant, but God decided to love us and cover us with His grace.
