And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you
All the way these forty years in the wilderness,
To humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart,
Whether you would keep His commandments or not”
(Deuteronomy 8:2)
THE SOLDIER WALKS IN THE DESERT WITH A RIFLE ON HIS SHOULDER. HIS FOOTSTEPS SINK IN THE DRY SANS AND HOT AIR PRODUCES BIG DROPS OF SWEAT ON HIS BROW, WHICH LAZILY MAKE THEIR WAY DOWN UNTIL THEY REACH THE NECK OF HIS THICK COMBAT SHIRT.
The soldier looks up to the sky and asks God why he allows so much devastation and ruin. By lowering his head, resigned, his wet eyes find the best lesson in life: a small flower stands beautifully towards the sky. It is blooming in the middle of the desert! Surrounded by dry sand! No water anywhere!
In a totally arid environment, the petals of that flower open to life. The soldier’s eyes capture that image, which remains forever etched in his retina and in his soul, reminding him that, in the least expected place, there is life; not mere survival, but beautiful, full and abundant life.
When we go through our particular desert in life, many times we think that God has forgotten us, and we take it as a punishment. At times, we interpret his hand as an avenging hand, and we find it difficult to realize that his loving hand is reaching out to support us and give us encouragement.
Life on this planet is like a journey through the desert. Problems weigh us down, crisis hit our moods, fatigue weakens our faith, and we lose hope. To get to the promised land, we must first cross this desert, but I want to remind you this morning that we did not cross it alone. Just as the soldier in history, a veteran in the Iraq war, found life in the midst of an environment of death, so we, in the desert of life, find the oasis that is God.
Are you going through a desert of trials, troubles, and heartbreak? Look for God; He is there. Soon you will see the borders of the heavenly homeland and your sad wandering in this desert will be over.
