«The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked what is perverse» (Proverbs 10:32).
THE TONGUE
I remember a time when I bought my daughter some toy glasses. Shortly after buying them, one of the screws came loose and one of the rods fell off. My daughter begged me to get the glasses fixed but, no matter how much I tried to explain to her that it was a toy, I was unable to convince her. So I went to see an optician. When arrived, the employee was busy on the phone and she drummed her fingers on the desk without noticing thy presence. So I had to make some movement so she would realize that I was there. She angrily hung up the phone and reluctantly directed her attention toward me.
«What can we do for you?» she asked.
«Look, I have these toy glasses and would like to know if they can be repaired.»
The employee could not hide her bewilderment. She almost struck me down with her gaze.
How had I dared to get her out of her seat for some insignificant toy glasses! She Ovisted her mouth, and said: «That will take three days because I will have to send them to the lab!»
Faced with such a reaction, I politely said goodbye. From there, I walked down one or two streets and found another optician. I was ashamed to ask if they could help me, since the glasses were a toy, but I decided to go in. Immediately, the optician greeted me: «Welcome, sir! How can we help you?»
«Look, I have these broken toy glasses,» I answered with some trepidation.
«Ah, don’t worry. We can fix those right away.»
The man went into a small workshop located at the interior of the business and son returned, cleaning the glasses with a cloth.
«They’re ready, sir. Please, let the girl know not to open and close the rods so often; it is better that they remain open,» said the employee.
«Thank you very much, sir! How much do I owe you?» I answered.
«It’s nothing, sir. I’ve got a lot of these screws in my shop. Come back whenever you like,» he said smiling.
When I realized that he was not going to charge me, I saw a pair of glasses that had been placed in the showcase that caught my attention. So I asked him how much the glasses cost and I decided to buy them. Before I left, I said, «I wasn’t coming to buy glasses, sir. But you treat your customers so well that it is inevitable to purchase the product. I congratulate you.»
The good treatment of others opens doors and is indispensable in business. People expect you to treat them well. If you do so, they will pay what you ask, regardless of the price. Don’t forget it.
