BE CAREFUL OF EXCESSES

“A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb,

but to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet»

(Proverbs 27:7).

HOUSEWIVES know that sugar and salt are two ingredients that can’t be missing in the kitchen; both give flavor and make food delicious if they’re used in moderation.  Eating salt is beneficial, because sodium regulates some of our body’s functions; it also has properties that help preserve food. However, when used excessively, it can cause diseases that hinder the work of the heart and kidneys. Needless to say, a stew without salt isn’t pleasant to taste.

On the other hand, sugar also provides energy and a sense of well-being. The enjoyment of eating a fruit is greatly due to the sweetness it provides to the palate. In addition, when we have low blood sugar levels, we feel tired and listless. However, a diet rich in refined sugars causes obesity and overweight, and increases the triglycerides; in general, it produces imbalance in the body.

God tells us we are the salt of the earth, meaning that our role is to preserve the truth and to bring flavor to life. However, we should do so in moderation, sympathy and maturity in Christ; consequently, we will help others to find flavor in life, which now they might find it bland.

Sugar also provides flavor. A woman’s sweetness expressed through love, carea delicate tone of voice and the soft touch of her hands makes her very precious in a rude, cold and indifferent society. However, sweetness is mis- understood and expressed at inappropriate time can be harmful instead of beneficial. Caring for those who mistreat us, overlooking their sins by considering them like simple mischief or looking for easy solutions to big problems so is not to cause discomfort, is acting with an excess of sweetness.

And as today’s title suggests, we should beware of excesses.

Let us be balanced; let’s use salt in moderation, not only when preparing food. Let us also be balanced to preserve our home’s healthy life. Let us use sugar to sweeten a wounded heart, offering words of encouragement to those who are discouraged, but let’s not use it to conceal sin.

The energy it provides is needed to motivate change in favor of greater good.
