BE A WISE SON

«A fool despises his father’s instruction, but he who receives correction is prudent» (Proverbs 15:5).

WISDOM

A while back I had the chance to leaf through an old family album. Suddenly, my head began to spin while I looked at past scenes that had remained frozen on photographic paper. There I was, on a small inflatable boat on the shores of some beach. My face seemed upset, uncomfortable and strained. It seemed like something was bothering me at that moment. One of my cousins was in the tiny launch, watching me carefully. And behind me, without my knowledge, my Dad was stretching out his arms to take care of his daring offspring. His eyes showed deep focus and love toward me. The scene touched me, and I started thinking that I hadn’t even realized what was happening; several years would have to go by to thank my father for that act of love that took place at the seashore. But then I thought, «I’m so unaware of all the love with which my father has loved me! How many of his loving actions have I not noticed?»

Maybe the main characteristic of a fatherly figure is compassion. God Himself acknowledges it in His Word, «As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him» (Psalm 103:13). God’s mercy is something Heaven has implanted in every father’s heart, because those who become fathers have to learn to live with fallible beings in the process of development, that is, children. That means that being a father implies having attitudes of forgiveness, understanding and pity.

In this world there aren’t any illegitimate children, instead there are illegitimate fathers. We all have a heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally. Unfortunately, there are many human beings who aren’t able to understand the great privilege fatherhood entails and refuse to fulfill that blessed responsibility. On the other hand, there are those who are embarrassingly tyrannical in what they believe is their children’s education. Both situations prevent them from perceiving God’s love. Compassion and affectionate awareness. To love and not forget we are loved. Those two virtues can change our life and help us be better people.

How do you react when your heavenly Father disciplines you? Does that show you are a wise person?

Ask the Lord today to help you wisely respond to His Word.
