«When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and when the wicked perish, there is jubilation» (Proverbs 11:10).
WORK
Erick Bernabé Barrondo Garcia was born in the village of Chiyuc (San Cristobal, Verapaz, Guatemala) in 1991 to a family of farmers. He grew in the midst of great poverty and difficulties; however, he never stopped dreaming of becoming successful someday. At first, he took part in long distance races, following his parents’ tradition, but one injury would change his life, because he was told to practice race walking in order to recover. Barrondo felt very comfortable with race walking, so in time he focused on that sport. Later he moved to the country’s capital to train with more dedication. Erick made his international début during the Panamerican Games in Guadalajara (Mexico) in 2011, winning the gold medal in the 20 Km. race walk The young man continued to train and got to the 2012 London Olympic Games at his best. But before leaving, by making great efforts he bought his parents a TV so they could watch him win.
On August 4, 2012, Erick woke up feeling very excited. His time had come. The starting pistol sounded, and the race walkers took off with all their strength. Barrondo placed himself among the first ones so as not to lag behind. He himself remembers, «There was a moment in which I got to fourth place; however, I was calm, confident in the job. The first part was slow and on the second part there were many world stars pushing and among them a dreamer from Guatemala who worked to achieve his dreams»—El Comercio, August 5, 2012. The Central American young man gave the best of himself and obtained the silver medal in the 20 Km. race walk. It was Guatemala’s first Olympic medal! The whole country was thrilled with emotion when they saw the boy win. He made his people very happy. In addition, Barrondo became an example for many young people who will surely imitate this champion in the future.
Would you like to make your people very happy? You can do it as well! Whatever area of life you participate in, remember that success lies behind hard work. All the progress you make in life satisfies those who love you, especially God.
