What’s that?» Kisha asked, pointing at a mysterious barrel resting in the basement. Mother glanced up from her unpacking. «Oh, just something the previous owners of the house forgot to take. They’ll probably pick it up later.» Kisha nodded and loaded her arms with sheets and pillowcases for a trip upstairs. Moving was a hassle. She’d be glad when all the boxes scattered about their new home were empty and life could get back to normal again.
During the days that followed, the little family discovered that some of their clothes were beginning to have little holes in them, such as Kisha’s favorite wool skirt. «Moths!» Dad gasped. «We’ve got moths.» Those little critters began to cost the family a great deal of money as they attacked the couch fabric and garments hanging in closets.
«Where are they coming from?» Mother moaned.
One day Kisha and her mom were in the basement storing some boxes when they saw a moth flit out of the barrel. «Daddy, come quick,» Mother called. «We need to see what’s in that barrel.»
When the man opened the container, hundreds of moths rose in a brown cloud. Inside the barrel was an old woolen coat, a breeding ground for the destructive pests. When they removed the coat and barrel, the moth problem vanished. It doesn’t do us any good to change our bad habits when there’s sin in the basement of our hearts. Some juniors spend their lives doing repairs to their reputations but never facing the cause of the damage.
If something’s hiding in your heart, confess it. Clean it out. Then allow Jesus to transform you into a new person. Go ahead. Lose the barrel!
