PRINCIPLES AND VALUES
«For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death»(Psalm 48: 14).
We all have rules and principles by which we guide our life. Have you thought about yours? Are they guiding you down the right path? What is the destination of your current route?A young woman decided to impress her new husband with an impressive dinner by preparing what she considered to be one of her specialties: baked fish. Certainly, the dinner achieved its intended impact and, after receiving the well-deserved praises, the husband asked,
«But why did you cook the fish without its head and tail?»
The question puzzled the young woman who shyly answered,
«Well, I don’t know. This is how my mother always cooked it.»
Unsatisfied with her answer, the following day she consulted her mother to find out why she cooked the fish that way. Likewise, her mother answered,
«Well, I don’t know. This is how my mother always cooked it.»
Finally, the grandmother, who was fortunately still alive, provided the reasons for this peculiar culinary art: «When we got married, your grandfather and I had a very small oven in our kitchen. In addition, the oven tray was even smaller, and the fish could only fit if we cut its head and tail. Since then, I’ve always cooked it this way!»
Just like the young woman from the story, we do many things out of habit or by imitation. We do not understand why and we have no idea that there are better ways of doing them. But we go on with our traditions even though they do not take us to better ends. Others follow what their hearts dictate because they do not know what is best for their life. Others still trust experience to show them which are the best results, repeating the moral of the old proverb: «Practice makes perfect.» Can you imagine getting to the end of your life only to realize you took the wrong path? What is the end of the road you are traveling now?The Word of God warns us: «There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death» (Prov. 14:12).
Therefore, we invite you to find the direction of the only One who can guarantee a happy ending when you cross the finish line to eternity.
Remember that «this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death» (Ps. 48:14).
