October 21, 2015. was the day of «Back to the Future II.” In the famous American sequel, «Doc» Emmet Brown and Marty McFly travel thirty years into the future and land on October 21, 2015. As a homage to the saga. that Wednesday cinemas throughout the world showed the movie. Before it began, movie goers were surprised by a message from Doc. who reminded them that the future depends on the decisions we make today.
Sometimes I wonder what would happen if Bible characters could travel in time. If they could see this apparently insignificant moment that completely changed our lives. We tend to think great decisions are the only ones that mark us, but little ones are like wasp stings: surprisingly powerful. In Esau’s cause, his future changed completely through a simple lentil stew (Genesis 2532).
We are all a bit like Esau: impatient and willing to trade our future off for today’s satisfaction. History repeats itself. The only things that change are the lentils, the things for which we do not want to wait. It may be a romantic relationship. a professional goal, or even a spiritual one. Our lentils are whatever we want to obtain by skipping the process and taking a shortcut.
Steaming hot, with the aroma of sautéed onions, our lentils call to us from their plates with mermaid voices. They tell us God has forgotten us. They tell us we are the only ones waiting and to bet on today. On emotionally cold days. in which a lentil stew would suit us marvelously, let us remember Esau and Doc. The future depends on the decisions we make today.
I guarantee you: like a boomerang, the decision you make today will land in your hands. Just a few years later, you will “go back» to that future and reap the consequences. The lives of Esau and Daniel (Daniel 1:8) were changed by a simple plate of food. pay attention to today’s small decisions; they will change your future.
Holy Spirit, please fill me with wisdom and faithfulness for today’s big and small decisions May each one lead me closer to You.
