Stop preaching to me,» Colby snapped. «You’re my aunt and I love you, but enough with this God stuff!»
Trouble had been brewing between him and his aging aunt for several years. Colby had stayed away as much as possible, because whenever they’d been together, she’d talk to him about his life and the lack of God in it.
Then came the news that Auntie had died. Everyone was sad, including Colby. After the funeral the family lawyer called a meeting for the reading of the will. The young man was happy to see that everyone was getting large sums of money. Then the lawyer looked straight at him. «To Colby, my wayward nephew,» he said, reading from the document, «I bequeath my Bible and all that it contains.»
«Her Bible!» Angrily Colby stomped to the desk and snatched the book from the lawyer’s hand. «She just never quits, even in death,» he fumed.
Hard times followed. Years passed. The Bible stayed in the old trunk where he had thrown it unopened the day he received it.
Finally, broken and ill, Colby returned to his childhood home and one day opened the trunk. There lay Auntie’s Bible. «Maybe I should have listened to you,» he breathed as he picked up the Book. Opening it, he found some money. As he thumbed through the pages, hundreds and then thousands of dollars slipped out. Tears burned Colby’s eyes. «To think that all this treasure was hid-den inside and all I had to do was open it. What a fool I’ve been!»
