ASK, SEEK AND KNOCK

«Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you» (Matthew 7:7, NLT).

When speaking of prayer, Jesus said, «Ask, seek and knock.» A progression is implied in those words! If you go to the city of San Carlos de Bariloche to visit a friend, the first thing you will do is ask for information: «How do I get to the neighborhood Pinar del Lago?” Once you find the neighborhood the next step is to seek your friend’s house. finally, you will park your car and come out to knock on the door. Ask, seek and knock. There is a progression, not only in the intensity of prayer, but also in our closeness to God, in the fusion of our will with that of the Father.

Our relationship with God is progressive. When we begin taking our first steps, our faith is immature and is based on asking and the blessings we might receive. In time, God leads us to seek Him, not only for bread and fish. Christian author Richard Foster describes that change in Prayer: «In the beginning our will is in struggle with God’s will. We beg. We pout. We demand. We expect God to perform like a magician .. .. We major in instant solutions and manipulative prayers. . . . In time, however, we begin to enter into a grace-filled releasing of our will and a flowing into the will of the Father.» At this stage, we learn to seek God, at all costs, even though there are no bread or fish, but rather hunger and thirst.

We begin to knock on the door when, in reverent submission (Hebrews 5:7, NIV), we exchange our dreams for God’s. Then, He invites us to knock and lunge at the gates of Hell itself. He invites us to live daring lives in which the kingdom of God is powerfully manifested. Budding lives, with open hands, that transcend our pride and focus on serving others. How wonderful it is to notice that Jesus said, «Ask, seek and knock.» He does not expect us to skip any step! Jesus is with us along the way; He answers all our prayers by His love, not our merits. He invites us to grow, to have a more intimate relationship with him, for His glory and our own good (John 16:24).

Dear Lord, teach me to ask, seek and knock. I want to keep progressing and maturing in faith. I want to be closer to You so that in reverent submission my heart will only want what You want. Amen.
