ARISE! GET OUT OF THIS TOWN! 05

 DEPRESSION

«And while he lingered, the men took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought  him out and set him outside the city» (Genesis 19: 16)

The second symptom of depression is the lack of motivation or interest for everything including one’s favorite activities. Christina fought for days to get out of bed and start the day—something she joyfully did before. Ramiro was sociable by nature; however, he lost the desire to meet his friends. Camilla loved playing volleyball but her motivation for this sport had vanished. The cause of this impassable wall in all three situations was depression that completely demolishes its victim and erases his or her motivation.

Today’s text lets us see a Lot who lacks initiative in getting out of Sodom. Saving his own life should have caused an immediate reaction but this was not Lot’s case because the angels had to force him out of the place. There is no proof that this man suffered from depression but his behavior illustrates one of its symptoms: the lack of motivation.

Harry Randall Truman (1896-1980) also lost his motivation toward the end of his life. He lived close to Mount St. Helens in the state of Washington (USA). There were many warnings about the imminent eruption of the St. Helens’ in the neighboring area, but Harry insisted on remaining at his lodge. Authorities visited him many times to try and convince him of the danger, but he did not budge. Then on May 18, 1980, the most destructive volcanic disaster in the US history happened as St. Helens erupted burying Harry under the fire, lava and ashes.

Harry and Lot’s stories were similar in that they both hesitated but, ultimately, they had different endings to their story. They both hesitated due to their common attachment to their possessions. But one of them ignored the warning and perished while the other one let the heavenly men grasp his hand and that of his family to save them.

Is there something that absorbs you that you are not able to react to what God asks you to do? Even if you lack motivation, God is ready to grasp your hand if you let Him. The same angels that led Lot’s group out of Sodom did not grasp the hands of his sons-in-law because they were not ready to let go of their possessions. If you so desire, He will grasp your hand and lead you to a safe ground and, ultimately, to the eternal salvation.
