«And he was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!'» (Genesis 28:17).
Jacob deceived his brother, was afraid, and fled. After two days of travel, he had been reflecting on his deceitful behavior and his need to confess. It was then that God appeared to him in a dream. The delay in seeing an answer often seems to be part of God’s plan to prepare us for that answer, to purify our soul and lead us to surrender ourselves unreservedly to His mercy and grace.
«Those accorded the privilege of a revelation of God find in their hearts a sense of profound awe.»—SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 1, p. 382. This expression of awe is an acceptance of God’s sovereignty. When Jacob thought that he was completely alone, he experienced the joy of God’s very presence. When he surrendered, he was able to perceive God’s intercession and the company of angels.
We need to reach that point of powerlessness, emptiness, exhaustion, inadequacy, and intense conviction of our guilt, in order to fully experience the presence of God in our life. Though we may not perceive it, God is present when we think we least deserve it. When we need Him the most, God shows us His dwelling place as a refuge of peace and safety, the only place worth inhabiting. When we experience this we are filled with a sense of reverence.
No matter what you need today, present it to God in prayer. Lord has special grace for the mourner, and its power is to melt hearts, to win souls. His love opens a channel into the wounded and bruised soul, and becomes a healing balsam to those who sorrow. ‘The Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort . . . comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.’ «—Thoughts from the Mount of Blessings; ch. 2, p 13.
God is just as close to you today as He was to Jacob during that night of anguish. ‘The more alone you feel, desperate and with no help in sight, the closer God is to repeat the same words He said to Jacob in a dream on that night: «Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you» (Genesis 28: 15),
Come confidently to God today. You will be refreshed and renewed as you are convinced of being in His presence.
