ANIMAL PROTECTION

“A righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel”. Proverbs 12:10

Balaam had been a good man and faithful prophet of God at some point in time. However, ambition, greed and constant dissatisfaction regarding his economic situation had turned him into a mercenary of faith, a charlatan who took advantage of his spiritual knowledge to cheat his victims. That’s how his fame reached Balak, King of Moab, who hired him to cast a curse on the people of Israel, even though God warned him not to do it. On the way, an angel appeared to him to persuade him not to proceed. But the third time, his donkey leaned on its master when confronted with a narrow path and the presence of an angel. So, Balaam reacted angrily and began hitting the animal. Suddenly, in an extraordinary way, the animal said to him, «What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?»

Balaam answered the donkey, «You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.»

The donkey said to Balaam, «Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?» (Numbers 22:28—30).

I’ve seen people mistreating animals several times. They foolishly take their frustration and bitterness out on these beings. The truth is, the way we treat animals reveals our character, «He who will abuse animals because he has them in his power is both a coward and a tyrant. A disposition to cause pain, whether to our fellow men or to the brute creation, is satanic. Many do not realize that their cruelty will ever be known, because the poor dumb animals cannot reveal it. But could the eyes of these men be opened, as were those of Balaam, they would see an angel of God standing as a witness, to testify against them in the courts above. A record goes up to heaven, and a day is coming when judgment will be pronounced against those who abuse God’s creatures»—Patriarchs and Prophets, ch. 40, p. 443.

Don’t allow cruelty to be in your heart. Treat animals with compassion. You don’t have to have a pet, but if you have one, it’s not right to neglect and mistreat it. That will negatively influence your spiritual life.

Animals are the only source of love and joy for many people. Respect their space and learn to live with them.
