AN UNFORGETTABLE TEACHER

«Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man» (Proverbs 3:3, 4).

Albert and James were the worst students of the class. Nothing seemed to motivate them to increase their efforts in the classroom. Both boys were used to being treated as the most incompetent of the school. Besides, they were mocked by their classmates and teachers. But one day a new teacher arrived at the school. When she became aware of Albert and James’s situation, she decided that things could not go on like they were. However, none of her methods seemed to work with those boys. They continued with low grades, indifferent attitudes, and very low self-esteem. But one day, the teacher organized an artistic expression activity among her students. To everyone’s surprise, Albert and James were captivated by the project and full of enthusiasm. On the day of the presentation, they showed up dressed as mimes and delivered an extraordinary presentation. The whole school was impressed with the participation of the boys. That day they were highly praised by their classmates. At last they realized that there was something they could do very well! The teacher was very excited about the progress of these young people and did not waste the opportunity. From that day on, she began to channel their learning through the artistic gifts that the boys had shown. The progress was very big. That teacher had changed their lives.

Sometimes it is easy to condemn a young person because they do not learn at the same pace as the rest of their classmates or because they do not assimilate any method that someone tries to impose on them. The truth is that there is not a single way to learn. Those who teach in the classroom must remember that they have in their hands the future leaders of their nations, the artists who will open spaces of opinion, the scientists who will develop new technologies, the entrepreneurs who will establish new businesses, the architects who will take care of the infrastructure of their land. How will you guide them? The teachers who leave their mark in life are those who can see great talent in young people with low self-esteem, generally undervalued by others. They are those who can open windows of opportunities to children who feel defeated during the best time of their lives. They will always be remembered for their commitment to changing lives.

Ask the Lord today to open a space in your heart to show mercy to others. Your help will always be remembered.
