ALONGSIDE GOD

«By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, ‘and was not found, because God had taken him’; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God» (Hebrews 11:5).

A MAN who owned land along the south Atlantic coast was looking for an employee. A mission that was not easy, because of the storms that swept through that region, ravaging the buildings and plantations. Finally, a short man accepted the offer. Answering rigorous questions, regarding his experience and disposition, he replied with an «I can sleep even when the wind blows.» And he was hired.

The landowner was very pleased with his work. Until one night, the wind blew heavily. The farmer quickly went to get his employee, as a great storm loomed, but he was sleeping. The owner went out through his property and discovered that everything was in order, the harvest was covered with canvas firmly tied to the ground. The animals were protected, and every door and window was very well secured. Then he understood the meaning of the phrase: «I can sleep even when the wind blows.» He was not sleeping because of a lack of responsibility, but because he was safe and secure.

We are living through stormy days. The winds are blowing everywhere. As a result, there is concern and distress. Crises can reveal despair or confidence, but those who manage to walk like Enoch have a different strength. The experience of those who walked in God’s way can also be ours.

What does it mean to walk with God? It is to walk according to His will. Enoch was in communion with God, his name means «dedicated,» «disciplined». For this reason, Enoch was able to walk in holiness before God for three hundred years. Enoch’s walk with God occurred in every aspect of daily life. He did not become a hermit. He walked with God and fulfilled his duties in his family and in his relationships as a friend and citizen.

Normally, we walk with someone when that someone is necessary in our lives. Is God completely necessary for you? Or is He just an accessory you wear on Sabbath, during worship, and then discard Him? Is God your friend, to the point that He often deserves a good walk with you? Is God your friend, in such a way that you spend time reading His Word and listening to his counsel?

Enoch walked with God, believing in His existence, recognizing his need, deepening the friendship, strengthening communication, and persevering in hope.

Three centuries had passed so exultantly together that

God wanted them to last an eternity.

So Enoch «was not found, because God had taken him» (Gen. 5:24).

Both on earth and in heaven,

Enoch walked and walks alongside God.
