Ann Nesmith and her camp counselor, Mrs. Cochran, sat on the dock happily soaking up the sunshine. The day had been perfect with lots of Pathfinder Club activities, hikes in the woods, delicious food, and swims in the lake. All at once the two friends saw a curious sight. An inner tube, probably cast adrift from a nearby camp, floated by just within reach. Absentmindedly Mrs. Cochran plucked it from the water and placed it beside them. She’d return it to its rightful owner later in the day.
«I’m getting hot,» Ann admitted. «How about a cooling dip?»
Mrs. Cochran grinned. «Last one in is a dork!»
With a happy squeal, the pair launched themselves off the dock and landed with a giant splash in the lake. But it suddenly became obvious that they hadn’t chosen their target correctly. The bottom was eight feet down, and Ann couldn’t swim. Mrs. Cochran disappeared under the water and rose again, sputtering and coughing.
«Help!» Ann gasped as she struggled to stay above the surface. «Help!»
Both were in peril. Both needed saving. That’s when the counselor remembered the inner tube.
«Throw the tube!» she shouted to a camper standing nearby. «Hurry!»
The girl on the dock grabbed the large, rubbery tube and tossed it into the air. Her aim was good, and the lifesaving device landed with a splat between the two struggling swimmers. Holding on to it, both kicked their way back to shore and spent a long time regaining their composure and thanking God for the curious object that had happened by at just the right moment.
