ACCORDING TO HIS PURPOSE

«By faith Moses, . . . refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy  the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible» (Hebrews 11:24—27, NIV).

MOSES WAS THE SON of Amram and Jochebed, parents who had faith in God. Hidden from the empire and sheltered by the Lord, the princess who rescued him from the river called him Hapimosis or Irumosis, that is, «one born or taken out of the Nile.» When Moses refused to call himself the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, he removed the reference to an Egyptian god Hapi or Iru and was left with just Moses; ready to live a life of faith.

By placing Moses in a reed ark and placing it in the Nile, Jochebed was all filling the pagan demand to offer a male son as a sacrifice to the river, which the Egyptians worshiped as a god. While floating in his small basket, Moses was regarded by the princess as a gift from the gods. So, she took him as a son, hiring the mother herself as his nurse.

As an adopted son, Moses had access to a life of comfort, privilege, position, prestige, wealth, and power. As a royal prince, he was educated in the wisdom of the Egyptians, their language, science, religion, leadership, management, and military command. His outstanding mind led him to be the pride of the nation. His appearance may have seemed Egyptian, but his heart was always Hebrew. His faith, loyalty, and devotion were always to the Lord. His hope was to free Israel by force of arms. He risked everything, but he failed. Defeated and discouraged, he became a fugitive and banished himself in a strange country.

«Moses spent forty years thinking he was someone, forty years learning that he was nobody, and forty years discovering what God can do with a nobody» (D. L. Moody). Therefore, in the deserts of Midian as a shepherd, he learned humility, dependence, self-control, wisdom, austerity, and simplicity.

God always rewards in due time the true faith of His children. Moses placed the enduring above the perishable and the invisible above the visible. That is why he attained the impossible. Faith allowed both he and his people to emerge from slavery and death to liberation and life.

Because of his commitment to faith, Moses lost the chance for his mummified body to be in a museum. By the grace of the Lord, although he went to his rest in death, he has risen and lives in the palace of the new Jerusalem.
