If you have ever driven though South Dakota going east to west, it’s a very long drive full of seemingly endless prairie grasses. Eventually you see the entrance to a unique national park called Badlands National Park. This strange name was given to the park by some early explorers who said these lands were bad because they were difficult to cross. At this point in the state, a higher plateau drops to a lower one by way of a series of amazing canyons.
The canyons are filled with trails and paths you can explorer. Unlike the Grand Canyon, where the rock layers are very hard, the Badlands canyons are constantly changing because they are not made of rock; they are made from a packed mud that erodes easily when it rains.
As we explored the park, we noticed that every once in a while we would see a small helicopter flying overhead. We concluded that somewhere nearby, someone was offering helicopter tours over the Badlands. Sure enough, as we exited the park we saw a company offering helicopter tours, so we pulled over. We filled out the necessary forms and paid. A few minutes later we walked toward the small helicopter that fit a maximum of three people. Moments later we lifted off and zoomed off toward the Badlands. The view of the Badlands from the sky was amazing. The canyons extended for miles and miles, where we could now clearly see how waters receded and eroded the amazing canyons.
As the earth slowly erodes and changes little by little, I’m reminded that God doesn’t change.
He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.
He’s consistent and reliable; you can always count on Him.
