A TREASURE IN CLAY VESSELS

«But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us» (2 Corinthians 4:7).

ALL WAYNE NEEDED to illustrate his sermon was a clay pot with a well-visible crack. With this goal in mind, he went to several nurseries, without any success, until he finally found what he wanted. It was an old, dirty flowerpot that, it appeared, had been set aside with a well-visible cracker for a long time in a corner.

«How much does this cost?» Wayne asked the store clerk.

«Don’t worry!» he replied. «You can take it for nothing.»

On his way to the cash register, Wayne saw the price on the price tag: $11.95.

«You know what?» Wayne said. «I’d like to pay for it.» «You don’t have to pay anything for that old flowerpot.»

«But I really want to pay for it!» Wayne insisted.

«That’s fine! Take it for two dollars.»

Although Wayne insisted on paying the price that was marked on the price tag, the employee did not argue anymore. He took the credit card and made the charge. When Wayne looked at the receipt, he noticed that the clerk had charged only five dollars, but he did not want to insist any longer. At the end of the day, he had just experienced in real life the point he wanted to illustrate in his sermon! To the nursery employee, the flowerpot was worthless, but to him, it was an object of great value. Why? Because he had a special purpose for the old flowerpot; that fact made it valuable in his eyes. The words of the apostle Paul then came to Wayne’s mind: «But we have this treasure in earthen vessels.

Who are the earthen vessels? You and I. And what is the treasure? «The knowledge of God’s glory on the face of Jesus Christ. » Despite being like clay flower pots— fragile, imperfect, defective—on the cross, the beloved Son of God paid, not a part, but the full price for our salvation. Why did He do that? Because He saw in you and in me beings of immense value. And now His wish is that we speak to others of that precious treasure that is Christ the Lord.

Thank You, dear Father, because in spite of my imperfections, your beloved Son paid the full price for my salvation with His blood. Please help me today to share with others that precious treasure that I have found in Christ Jesus, my Savior.
