«Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments» (Deuteronomy 7:9).
There are two coast redwood trees in front of my house. They are a different species from the famous giant redwood but belong to the same family. Coast redwood are the tallest conifers in the world; they can reach more than 377 feet in height, not counting the roots (like a 38-floor building). Although these particular trees in front of my house are only 65 feet tall, they are still imposing! Looking at them, I wonder: Who planted them? Only a visionary would; these trees can live more than two thousand years! Planting a redwood is something that is done with posterity in mind.
Many times, our plans are limited. We settle for dreaming small dreams, believing that this denotes humility. However, God calls us to have a holy ambition, to plant redwood, to be part of a blessing that reaches a thousand generations. Consecrated ambition dreams big; not to achieve fame, but to bless more widely. True ambition is anchored in our identity in Jesus, not the opposite. That’s why we can take risks and even fail because our identity remains intact. This kind of ambition «requires faith and obedience based on trust because we move forward without knowing where we are going. Where there is ambition, there must be risk. Risk is the price of ambition; if you eliminate risk, you destroy ambition. The Christian life has a kind of mysterious suspense when we act with holy ambition, without knowing the results,» said Dave Harvey in Rescuing Ambition.
The person who planted the redwoods in front of my house knew he would never see the end result of those actions, but that didn’t stop him. Nor did he put a plaque next to the trees that read, «So and so planted these redwoods in 1850,» coveting the applause of generations to come. He simply planted a small seed, with holy ambition, and the blessing continues to grow.
Dear Lord, I thank You because my actions can bless many people.
I beg You to sanctify my ambition and fill me with courage.
Please help me get rid of fear and the addiction to control. I want to value Your kingdom more than my reputation, my marital status, my lifestyle, or my economic income.
I want to dream and plant blessings that reach a thousand generations. Amen.
