A SPECIAL TOUCH 

“And to one he gave five talents, to another two, 

and to another one, to each according to his own ability; 

and immediately he went on a journey” 

(Matthew 25.15). 

MORE THAN ONCE, I have been amazed at the masterful manifestation of a talent. I remember, for instance, an occasion when I was impressed as I listened to a four-year-old boy playing incredibly beautiful melodies on an old piano, as if they were cascading harmonies descending from God’s throne. What a talent! I have seen people, and I am sure you have seen them too, to accomplish amazing things using their hands to paint, sculpt, play an instrument, knit, draw or create an artwork, among other artistic expressions. There are also people with virtuous voices, whose songs rapture the soul and bring delight to the most refined ears. And other virtuous people as well perform mental feats by memorizing dates, numbers, facts, names, events and words.

We call those expressions «talents” and we say people who have them are gifted, with special abilities. The word «talent» comes from the Latin talentum, the name for a gold coin., I like to think that when God made us, He gave us those «little gold coins» as a legacy and they are actually the means that enable us to do things. All of us, absolutely all of us, have been touched by God and have talents that, as part of the search for meaning in life, need to be developed by using them to serve others so we will grow and above all, glorify God.

Maybe your circumstances have led you to believe you have no talent; perhaps you have received many negative messages regarding your lack  of abilities, and this has led you to be convinced that you have no talents at all.

Phrases such as “nothing you do is right,“ “you are good for nothing, «you are useless” or “you are a failure” are some of the messages we sometimes get which make us doubt ourselves and even believe that when God made us, He was partial and arbitrary But, you know what? This isn’t a Biblical concept. God gives all of us talents so we may use them in His work. The fact that other people don’t value them doesn’t mean we don’t have them.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. What God thinks of you is more important than what people say.
