«Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before» (1 Thessalonians 4:11, NLT).
Sometimes we think our experiences in life should be grand so as to feel we have meaningful lives. We think that, to be valuable, we should leave behind a visible and extraordinary legacy. We should organize a massive event, adopt twenty children, or fight against human trafficking so that our lives matter. And although those are all good things, when we think something’s value is determined by its size, we spend life running around exhausted in search of those goals we believe will grant us value. Insecurity will keep on pushing us to do more things, whispering that the worse that could happen to us is for our lives to be absolutely normal and small. But, as Melanie Shankle writes in It’s All About the Small Things: «thinking this way can make us lose sight of the small things that could also change a life: taking a plate of food to a sick neighbor, smiling at a waitress who is having a bad day, reading to our children at bedtime, or simply praying with someone who is going through a hard time.» The beautiful and liberating truth of the gospel is this: small things are transcendental.
Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a mustard seed: it is insignificant at first sight, but then it becomes a tree that grows so tall that the birds of the air make their nests in its branches. He also compared the kingdom of heaven to yeast, which makes dough rise (see Matthew 13:31-33) Both examples are very simple and humble! There are no special effects, or bright signs, or millions of followers on social media. Nothing glamorous. Simply seeds and yeast, which grow in a slow, organic way.
Jesus is the One who is extraordinary. We just need to be faithful in the little things, because, as Melanie Shankle says, what really matters is not «the things we accomplish, but the people we are becoming. Life is more about the way in which He uses us. . . even when we are only living our normal, boring lives.» Relax! Jesus is the One who is extraordinary. You can have a completely normal, but very meaningful life.
Dear Lord, thank You because the size of my life does not determine my value. Thank You because small things are important in Your kingdom.
