“It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer;
and while they are still speaking, I will hear” (Isa. 65:24).
It happened on a Tuesday afternoon, at my house. We were praying together, like every Tuesday for the last seven years. We prayed especially for a young woman who was facing a very difficult situation. In addition to praying, we had tried to call and visit her to help her, but she ignored our messages and calls. We didn’t know if we should insist, or respect his decision and walk away.
As my friend Anne prayed and told God that she wanted to help, but didn’t know if she should keep pushing, a thought came to my mind: We should ask God for a clear sign; something unexpected, like a pineapple. I did not dare to share this thought while we prayed. Although I am trying to hear God’s voice every day, recognizing it takes practice. I often doubt and am not sure of the origin of my thoughts; whether they come from God or from my own imagination. Also, even though I know that God can communicate through signs, I don’t think it’s a good idea to constantly rely on them.
Despite my doubts, when we finished praying I told my friends: “I don’t know if this idea is from God or not. But while we were praying, the thought crossed my mind that you should ask God for a clear sign to know if he wants you to continue insisting; like seeing a pineapple in an unexpected place, or something like that.”
The next day, our WhatsApp prayer group had several interesting messages. Anne had called the young woman the night before and left one last message. In the morning, when he got up (still no answers), he prayed like this: “Lord, I need a clear sign. I want to help her, if it is your will». That afternoon, surprisingly, the young woman returned his call and they agreed to meet.
But that is not all! Joanna, another lady in the prayer group, was in a supermarket with her daughter that afternoon when Anne sent the message to the WhatsApp group. Joanna was distracted replying to the text when her daughter said, «Look, mom, a pineapple!» At that moment, Joanna looked up to see a potted pineapple plant, fruit and all, for sale. Joanna took a photo and sent it to us, with this comment: “I just saw this. God is confirming the message.»
We are invited to share our life with Jesus through prayer. He takes note of our every need and responds in the most creative ways.
Lord, today I want to experience your love and creativity in prayer.
