Remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. EPHESIANS 2:12, NASB
Just as we met up with our friends at the Adventist church, we were told something was happening at the Berlin Wall. There was talk that after so many years, the wall was finally going to open up. When we got there, thousands of people were gathered at the Brandenburg Gate, one of the most famous spots along the Berlin Wall that surrounded West Berlin. We pushed as close to the wall as we could and got to within one hundred feet of it. Off to the right there was a park with some trees, so we went over the trees.
Four of five other people had climbed the trees to get a better view, so I did the same. From up in the tree I could easily see over the wall to an area called the Death Strip, where people weren’t allowed to cross or they risked getting shot by snipers. After being up there for quite some time, I heard some announcements in German over a loudspeaker, and then shortly after that I saw something that shocked me. From the other side of the Death Strip I saw a guy running through the Death Strip toward the wall on our side! I was terrified for him because he could get shot for crossing! Moments later, he jumped up on the wall with his arms in the air, and the crowd cheered. Over the next few minutes it was chaotic as people from both sides started climbing the wall. The wall was a wide as a sidewalk in that spot, se there was plenty of room for lots of people to climb up and stand there. We were in awe as we watched this historic event unfold.
It’s sad that East and West Berlin were separated for so many years. It’s also sad that we have been separated from our Creator even longer. When JESUS died on the cross for us, He tore down the wall that separated us. Now we can live knowing that we will be reunited with HIM!
