A MORE THAN RELIABLE BOOK

«For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope» (Romans 15:4).

THE BIBLE IS a fascinating book that makes two things clear: 1) the care that God has taken so it would reach us in its entirety and 2) that each one of its authors was inspired by the same divine Spirit. We see it in many instances—we see one example when we analyze the book of Isaiah.

The book of Isaiah is known as «the little Bible» for the following reasons (among others):

It has sixty-six chapters, just as the Bible is made up of sixty-six books.

The principal theme of the first thirty-nine chapters is judgment, and that of the remaining twenty-seven chapters is grace and justification; as for the Bible, the first thirty-nine books deal basically with judgment and the other twenty-seven deal with grace.

Chapter forty-four of Isaiah contains the same theme as the forty-fourth book of the Bible—the Acts of the Apostles. We read, for example, «For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants» (Isaiah 44:3). The outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the first conversions of the Gentiles are the fundamental topics of Acts.

Isaiah forty-five contains the same theme as the forty-fifth book of the Bible, the Epistle to the Romans: righteousness and salvation.

All this reminds us once more of the great trust we can have in our God, a God who takes responsibility for such small, but significant details; a God who tells you in His «little Bible»; «I am with you; I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand; I have called you by your name; You are Mine» (see Isaiah 44:10; 43:1). You can make God the central axis of your life without any type of reservations or fears.

We Adventists were known for a time as «the people of the Book» because church members always walked with a Bible under their arms and knew it very well because they read it regularly. It is also important for us today to read the Bible, since in it is all that we need to know for our salvation and to live a life that has meaning here on this earth.
