«Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord» (Ephesians 5: 19).
I MET MAYRA when she was my student in high school. She was always happy, positive, receptive, and cooperative, and had social and spiritual qualities that would never make you suspect that she suffered from hydrocephalus. Years later, I was talking to her on the telephone. That was not an ordinary conversation. In every word, she reflected the spirit of Ephesians 5:19, today’s text.
Inevitably, and with the passing of the years, the inflammation in the brain produced a series of damage in the optic nerves in such a way that by October 2009, Mayra was going through the worst crisis of her life: the doctor confirmed that she would not be able to see again. She had become blind and it was an irreversible situation.
In the midst of the darkness of blindness, Mayra went to the Lord and talking to Him, she explained that she wanted to have a special talent, a gift to be able to use in His service in her new condition of darkness. That very day, this simple young woman received the heart of a poet. While I was talking to her, she was inspired and said to me [in rhyming phrases in Spanish]: «Like a heavenly jeweler, God, the Lord, wanted to give me divine pearls so that I could reflect Him between the tears and the smiles. So, there is no suffering that could stop me, because God, the Lord, transformed me with His love into a beautiful pearl.»
Mayra was not able to see fulfilled her dream of studying, but her soul was fill of light. Jesus gives her a poem every day and a heart filled with love and hope, which makes me think about the book of Psalms because it is what the psalms were: poems, hymns, prayers to worship God, used in antiquity as Israel’s hymnbook.
Ephesians 5:19 shows us the way we are to speak with others as daughters of God: not dwelling on our own thoughts or focusing on the behavior of our fellow human beings, and by no means commenting on it with the intent to criticize. Our way of talking should be characterized by continuous praise to our God through psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, and, why not, inspirational poems. This constitutes a vaccine against sin, which is always struggling to emerge from our natural heart.
