«What you say can preserve life or destroy it; so you must accept the consequences of your words» (Proverbs 18:21, GNT).
A WELL-KNOWN STORY tells about two girls who wanted to set a trap for an old wise man. Thus, one of them took a butterfly in her hands, closed them in such a way that it could not be seen, and asked the old wise man: «How do you think this butterfly is, alive or dead?»
The wise man replied: «It is how you want it to be, since it is in your hands.» To a certain point, the same thing happens with your interpersonal relationships: a large part of your success is in your hands because it depends on the words you say and those you hold back. And that—deciding what to say and what to keep quiet—is in your hands alone. That is why being blameless with your words is of the greatest relevance.
You know, in order to talk well, you have to think well (about everything and everyone); beginning there is the first step. «Be transformed by the renewing of your mind» (Romans 12:2), the apostle Paul tells us. I invite you today in the name of Jesus to open your mind to the work of the Holy Spirit to help you have healthy, transformed thoughts reflected in words that bring life to you and your interpersonal relationships because «a good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart» (Luke 6:45, NLT).
If one of your character defects is to talk too much, at the wrong time, and on topics that are not appropriate, I believe that it is worth it to make a conscious effort to overcome that bad habit. On these pages, I would like to help you with some indications from the Holy Scriptures:
«Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers» (Ephesians 4:29). «Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit» (Proverbs 15:4, NLT).
«Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing» (1 Peter 3:9, NLT).
«Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive» (Proverbs 17:28).
