A LEARNED TONGE – PART 2

«He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction» (Proverbs 13:3).

A FUNNY FABLE says that a dog was lost in the woods when, suddenly, he met a panther that was determined to eat him. Afraid that he was going to lose his life, the little dog looked everywhere for a way of escape and discovered some animal bones in a corner. Looking at them, he exclaimed out loud: «What a delicious panther I just ate! I need to find another.»

The panther ran away, frightened of being the next one to be devoured by that strange animal.

From a branch in a nearby tree, a lonely monkey that had witnessed the whole scene ran toward the panther to tell her what had happened: «Hey, buddy, don’t run away; those bones have been there a long time. The dog is mocking you.’

With the little monkey perched on her back, the now-angry panther took off running to really eat the dog this time. When the dog found out that the monkey had told the panther everything, he turned around as if he had not seen them and said out loud: «I sent the monkey a short time ago to find me a panther to eat, but he is not coming back! What could have happened to him?’

Once again, the panther turned around and sped away. The monkey’s words, as wise as they seemed, were only good to make the panther experience the same fear a second time. This usually happens when people poke around places that are none of their business. The words of the dog, on the other hand, clever and keen, allowed him to come out victorious twice before an animal much superior in strength and power.

Let us change the topic to us today. Tie Bible tells us: «He who guards his mouth preserves his life» (Proverbs 13:3). Even though experience demonstrates over and over that this is so, it seems that we have a hard time learning it and fixing it in our minds. We go looking for unnecessary problems by not being able to hush at the right time, or simply by not paying attention to something being told.

My friend, «a truly wise person uses few words» (Proverbs 17:27, NLT). The «reward depends on what you say» (12:14, prudent keep their knowledge to themselves, but a fool’s heart blurts out folly» (verse 23, NIV). In which group would you like to be?
