TEMPERANCE
«Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God»(Ecclesiastes 2:24).
Based on epidemiological data of populations with a high rate of longevity, some researchers claim that those who consume a smaller amount of food and fulfill the necessary requirements of vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients improve their general health, postpone the onset of degenerative diseases and prolong their life expectancy up to ten years. Apparently, reduced ingestion is associated with better health results. However, there are some people who reduce their food intake, limit their food consumption to very few products or ingredients, and organize them in precise amounts regardless of body type. In this regard, the scarcity of food, instead of improving their health brings deterioration since it is an inappropriate diet for the body.
Not everybody can feed themselves in the same way. The nutritional needs vary significantly depending on age, daily activities, individual health and preferences.
One of my (L) favorite food Is the Mexican tortillas (even if I don’t cook them exactly like they are popular in Mexico). I make them with flour, water, oil and salt; and for the filling, I put out a variety of ingredients like chopped tomato, salad leaves, sweet corn, avocado, ricotta, mashed beans, onion and chopped eggs. Everyone uses ingredients that they like. We do not always have all the ingredients and not all people want to eat them all, but that is exactly what I like about it: each diner can stuff his tortilla with what is better and healthier for him.
Knowledge and commitment are needed to be able to choose, prepare and cook the food. Hippocrates states «we are what we eat» makes us reflect on what and how we eat. Is your food healthy? Is it nutritious? Is it simple? Is it tasty? These questions can help us when we plan and prepare our meal. Looking for simple, good, nutritious quality food that is pleasingly prepared are all principles of healthy diet.
Today’s Bible verse reminds us that «nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.» In this case, it is good to remember that whatever we eat, drink or do whatever else, we do it all «to the glory of God» (l Cor. 10:31).
