A GREAT LESSON FOR LIFE

«Say to wisdom, «You are my sister,» and call understanding your nearest kin» (Proverbs 7:4).

WISDOM

On several occasions, some young people have asked me to give them an important piece of advice for their lives. More than once I’ve told them, «Learn to enjoy your studies, delight in learning.» Nothing makes me happier than a young person who’s excited for books and knowledge. Their passion for learning is contagious! Their future is promising!

Hebrew teachers of wisdom tried to instill the virtues of hard work, enthusiasm, caution, sexual moderation, sobriety, loyalty to authority and religious compliance, all elements of a necessary moral for success in this world. TO the Hebrews,  all the order descended from Heaven. They weaved that order into their various daily activities, including eating, worship, civil legislation, education and war. Success came from the God that had given them life. They also believed their misfortunes were the result of disobedience. That’s why they had to obtain wisdom, to  take the right direction in the path of life.

However, given its characteristics, wisdom was the result of the high class in society, whose members gravitated around the country’s capital, that is, Jerusalem. The wealthiest sectors of the Hebrew world weren’t very interested in changing the status quo, instead they fought to retain the old order of retribution here and now. It was obvious that having wisdom, as well as handling and dominating it would guarantee them a life of privilege that would favor their well-being. In contrast, the lower class, struck by poverty and oppression, felt tormented by the problem of the prosperity of the wicked and suffering of the righteous. That question was the basis of the book of Job, who wonders the whole time why good people suffer and bad ones prosper in spite of having a God who supposedly judges everyone by their actions. The question is so strong that God Himself comes to Job and asks him a series of rhetorical questions to answer the concerns of the distressed Bible character.

There are many more opportunities nowadays to access knowledge and wisdom than in ancient times. Make good use of your time! If you learn to enjoy learning, you’ll access the world of knowledge in an extraordinary way.

Does it bother you to have to study? Do you think school is a nuisance? Ask the Lord today to change your attitude toward learning and teach you to enjoy your opportunities.
