“The eternal God is your refuge,
And underneath are the everlasting arms”
(Deuteronomy 33:27).
CHILDREN have always been a source of inspiration to me; I can learn great lessons from their fragility and innocence. Like one I learned from a little girl who will tell you about this morning.
She was small; perhaps a little over three years old. Her father carried her while she rested her head on his shoulder and slept soundly. Her small body was relaxed, she was sleeping safe and sound, and a smile shone on her face. I thought she was tired from having had a long day in which she might have started pre-school and, when she had a long day in which she had seen her dad, she had gotten comfortable in his arms with the assurance she would be in the warm of her home when she woke up. How fittingly Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14). ln other words, those who trust implicitly in God as they lay in His arms.
Being like children is very challenging for adults, who sometimes feel self-sufficient, let go of God and try to survive life’s hardships through their own effort.. Surrendering ourselves in God’s arms, resting in Him and having the assurance that He will safely take us to our heavenly home is a difficult task us or adults. A false assurance in what we can do and what we have makes me feel self-sufficient. We sometimes boldly try to give God instructions to act and answer our prayers as we want Him to do it, but we don’t submit to His will.
The girl in the story literally surrendered herself in her father’s arms; without doubts, mistrust or worry, because she knew that she was safe and free from any trouble since she was with him. She knew that he would take her safely home. There’s greatness and a lesson in faith we need to learn from the simplicity of her reasoning. Children believe everything their parents tell them because they know they love them. There is no ignorance in a child’s innocence; on the contrary, there is a great wisdom. It only we would feel like they feel toward their parents in our relationship with God, we would have a life that is free of many burdens and worries.
Let us learn to rest in our heavenly Father’s arms. Let us relax in our daily lives knowing we are safely headed home, even if we are going upwind and dangers and crises lurk in front of us.
