A FAMILY REUNION

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands. REVELATION 7:9, NKJV

A few years back I found myself traveling to Chile to attend a family n reunion. I was going to meet relatives whom I had seen once or twice in my life and many others I had never met before. I had never been to a family reunion before, so I was excited. Growing up as a pastor’s kid, I never lived near relatives. On both sides of my family, we were scattered all over the world. I have relatives from Norway to Cuba, from Chile to the Philippines and Australia. I represent a small part of our extended family that ended up in the United States.

We landed in Santiago, Chile and traveled by bus north to the city of La Serena, about an eight-hour bus ride. We were met at the bus station by a group of relatives. My uncle who lived in that city owned a hotel, so during those few days, our families took over all the rooms, and we spent a few days reuniting and getting to know new relatives. That first evening, we all walked to the city plaza, a bustling park where the locals come in the evenings to walk around, sit on park benches, listen to music, and participate in the local folk dances. At one point during the reunion we put a very long table in the middle of the hotel, and every person in the family sat at this table. It must have been thirty feet long with more than fifty seated at the table! During those days we shared photos, played games, and walked around the city. One afternoon my wife and I took all the young cousins walking to the center of town to buy them ice cream.

The time we spent there is time I will cherish and remember for the rest of my life. I’ve never been to a family reunion like that since, but there’s another family reunion I’m already looking forward to—the big reunion in heaven!
