A CLEAN HEART

SABBATH FRAGRANCES

«Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow» (Psalm 51:7).

One Friday night I was at an airport. It was my third night sleeping there and I was anxiously waiting for a seat on a flight.

Veronica rushed by carrying her luggage and with her came the scent of an expensive perfume. We had seen each other the previous night and she was aware of my situation.

I was dirty, without perfume, having worn the same clothes for four days (although I washed and dried it in the bathroom every day). The flight was cancelled again that night. Veronica went back home; I went to my corner on the floor.

The following day I met her again and she brought me a packet of wipes: one of the most precious gifts I’ve ever received.

Since that day, I didn’t go to sleep feeling dirty any Friday evening, until a few years later, at a camporee, when it happened to me again.

Not that it’s a sin not to take a shower before Sabbath, but it’s nice to start that day off by being clean.

In the midst of so many activities at the camporee, that Friday I didn’t have time to shower and the water ran out. . . but I had taken wet wipes left over from the ones Veronica had given me that time.

Silently at dawn, while I wiped my feet in the dark, I thought about how humble we need to be and how hard it is to want to clean our exterior if we still harbor negative thoughts, discouragement and lack of faith within. God can clean us inside and out. He reminded me that, just as He had taken care of me those days at the airport, and just as He had provided a reason to make me smile that time, He was once again assuring me that what was truly important that day was to start the day off with a clean heart, and to spend time with Him.

With His «nothing,» a simple packet of wet wipes, He showed me He’s my everything.

Which small details remind you of God’s love and care?

What bad feelings does God have to cleanse you of today?

Which things do you have to surrender to Him?

He wants to clean us today. Let’s pray the Psalmist’s prayer and allow God to remind us, even if it’s through a small gesture, how much He has cared for us up to now and that however little or much He gives us, in His hands, it means everything we truly need.
