A CLEAN AND RIGHTEOUS HEART

«I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance» (Luke 15:7).

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING that comes to your mind when you hear the name of King David? If we took a survey with that question, many would remember his double sin, that of committing adultery with Bathsheba, which then led to Uriah’s death.

Isn’t it wonderful that God sees things from a different perspective? Though He resoundingly disapproved of David’s sin, and let him reap its terrible consequences, God forgave him completely, according to the following statement: «My servant David, who kept My commandments and who followed Me with all his heart, to do only what was right in My eyes» (1 Kings 14:8).

How impressive! Why does the Lord speak of David in terms that seem to suggest that he never sinned? The reality is that David did sin, and horribly so; but there are at least two reasons why God calls David «My servant.»

First of all, how many of David’s other sins do the Scriptures speak of? Since he was a human being, it’s obvious that he sinned on other occasions, but it seems that David’s usual practice was to do the right thing. It’s our usual practices and our tendencies that reveal our character, as the following statement indicates: «The character is revealed, not by occasional good deeds and occasional misdeeds, but by the tendency of the habitual words and acts. «—Steps to Christ, ch. 7, p. 57. Here might be the reason why God expressed of David what He said of no one else: «I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will» (Acts 13:22, emphasis added).
The second reason why God calls him «My servant» isn’t less important: as great as his sin was, so was his repentance. Just read Psalm 51 to find the proof.

What can we learn from King David’s experience? That no matter how serious our sin is, God will forgive us if we repent wholeheartedly. That’s what He promises in His Word: «If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness» (l John 1:9). If you have fallen into sin, at this very moment, like King David, you can kneel before your heavenly Father and ask Him to have mercy on you and to erase your sins, by His grace. As a result, the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, will cleanse you of all sin, and He will give you a clean and righteous heart.

Holy Spirit, please lead me so that doing the right thing in Your eyes may become a habit in my life, starting today.
