«You gave them bread from heaven for their hunger, and brought them water out of the rock for their thirst» (Nehemiah 9:15).
HE WAS barely seven years old, but his mother had taught him to trust in Jesus and he had learned it very well, so much so that he put it into practice every day of his simple childish life. And that’s what he demonstrated one ordinary day in the decade of the 1970s.
Everything was going along like any other day until suddenly, there was no water in the whole town. This almost never happened, and less so in the early hours of the morning, when homemakers were doing their housework and preparing lunch for their families. The lack of the precious liquid prevented them from continuing with what they were doing, so some neighbors decided to go into the street to talk to each other about what had happened. This was how the little seven-year-old boy heard the news. Filled with faith in his best Friend Jesus, he told those women, «Don’t worry. I am going to pray to Jesus and He is going to send us water.» And he did that.
The mother and the child knelt down to pray. They had barely finished the prayer when a sound could be heard in the pipes. Soon, water began to come out of the tap and in such abundance as had never been seen before… but only in their house!! The mother ran to tell her neighbors that there was water in her house and when they saw that there was none in the other houses, a long line formed of women with empty containers, hoping to be able to fill them in the home of that little boy. His parents took advantage of the opportunity to let their neighbors know about the beliefs of the Adventist Church, and many received Bible studies and gave their lives to Jesus.
Do you need something urgently? God is your Provider and He tells you today: «Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know» (Jeremiah 33:3). Perhaps what you need urgently is more complicated than water to drink, but the promise applies equally in your situation. If you have a simple faith like that of a child, you will be able to ask God to satisfy your hunger and your thirst with bread from heaven and the water of life, and He will do it. And you, satisfied by Him, will give witness of His power.
