«Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death » (Proverbs 11:4).
The King of Lydia, Croesus proverbial wealth was acclaimed by several ancient authors. The monarch ascended to the throne at the age of 35 and, continuing with his father Alyatte’s policy, continued expanding his territory and subjugating neighboring people. He conquered Ionia, Aeolia and Dorida, in addition to Mysia, Phrygia and Pamphile. That’s how he made Lydia the most powerful kingdom in the Near East and Sardis, its capital, an important intellectual center. It is said that Croesus emitted the first gold coins. But in spite of all his wealth, Herodotus wrote that before the battle against Cyrus, Croesus gave generous offerings to his gods, including a sacrifice of more than three thousand animals of various kinds and a huge pyre with gold embossed beds, gold cups, purple dresses and tunics; then he set fire to all of it. Later on he presented extremely costly gold and silver offerings to the god Apollo’s at the temple in Delphi, wanting to earn his favor when facing imminent defeat by an invading army. The Battle of Pteria took place by the Halys River, in Cappadocia, from 547 to 546 B.C., between the armies of Croesus and Cyrus the Great. Despite the fact that there wasn’t a clear victor, Croesus retreated to Sardis. In 546 B.C. they fought once again in the Battle of Thymbra, near Sardis. The capital of Lydia was strongly besieged for fourteen days and, finally, fell into the hands of the Persians. Croesus was taken captive by his enemies.
Is happiness based on money? Absolutely not! les not good to be obsessed with getting rich because it will consume our life and prevent us from enjoying the happy times Heaven gives us daily. In another place in the Bible Solomon adds a comment, «He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity» (Ecclesiastes 5:10). Actually, wise money management is key to building character.
Ask the Lord today to help you wisely manage the money that comes your way and to remember that wealth is a means to worship the heavenly Father.
