Mary Slessor moved through the night jungle with a prayer on her lips. «Please, God, close the wild beasts’ mouths.» She was hurrying to stop a war between two angry African tribes.
» A woman? Stopping a war?» the chief at the village had chuckled. «Impossible!»
«You see only a woman,» Mary told him. «But don’t forget this woman’s God.»
At midnight she reached the camp of the village warriors. Dancing around a campfire, they shouted and waved their spears, preparing themselves for battle. «Don’t do this,» she pleaded. «You and the other tribe must sit down and talk about your differences. No one must die.» Some of the men laughed. Others told her to go to get some rest and they’d discuss things calmly in the morning. But while the woman slept, they hurried away to the battlefield.
In the morning she rushed to the other camp and found that tribe’s warriors ready for the kill. «Stop,» she called. «No one must die!» One of the men stepped forward from the snickering group and knelt before her. «Do you remember me?» he asked. «You came to my but when I was young and healed me. You speak wisely. This is a foolish war. We want to stop it too.»
Before long, Mary had both sides sitting around a conference campfire at which they solved their problems to everyone’s satisfaction. No one died. Peace returned. Mary Slessor stopped many wars in Africa’s jungles. She became known as the White Queen of Okoyong. Many saw only the woman. But thousands came to know and love the woman’s God.
