THOUGHTS OF PEACE

«For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope»

(Jeremiah 29: 11).

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (VVHO) defines mental health as «a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.» According to recent statistics, one in every five families in the United States has someone who suffers from some type of mental illness (i.e., phobia, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, panic attacks). Did you know that depression is currently the number one cause of permanent work leaves in the United States? According to the WHO, more than three hundred million people in the world suffer from depression.

The causes of this illness are too many and too complex to deal with them in one simple reflection. Depression can have a biological origin or be the result of circumstances of life such as divorce, the death of a loved one, the loss of employment, or low self-esteem. The Bible contains passages that can help you to have mental peace if you are suffering from depression. I hope you can find light in the following passages.

  •  «Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God» (Psalm 42:11, GNT).
  •  «Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things» (Philippians 4:8).
  •  «The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles» (Psalm 34:17).
  •  «I waited patiently for the Lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God» (Psalm 40:1—3, NLT).
  • «You, O Lord, area shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head» (Psalm 3B).
  • Friend, being depressed is not a sin; it is a consequence of living in a world of sin. Be sure of being well connected with God and well established in His Word.
