Meri had just settled down to sleep in her little African but when she heard the drums. «They’re calling my people to a religious meeting,» she said excitedly. «I must go.» As she was preparing to leave, she heard someone say, «The white man is going to preach!»
She and her relatives had gone just a little way when they heard the drums again. «Hurry!» Meri urged. But no one responded. As a matter of fact, they weren’t on the trail at all. She was in bed. It had all been a dream. I wonder what it means? she wondered.
Months passed. Then in October of 1946, as the village rested under a hot midafternoon sun, the sound of beating drums echoed in the humid air. Meri frowned. Where had she heard that sound before? Then she gasped. The dream!
«We must answer the drums,» she announced to her family. «They call from my dream!»
When the group arrived at the meetinghouse, Meri looked inside and, sure enough, a white man was standing up to preach. His name, she found out later, was Pastor M. E. Lind.
Meri enjoyed every word of the sermon, but most of her friends and relatives weren’t interested. It didn’t matter. By now she knew that the drums that had called her were God’s drums and she must answer. Soon she gave her heart to Jesus.
Her family evicted her from her home, but that didn’t even matter. She was marching to the beat of a new drummer now. In due time she led hundreds of souls to Christ and was always ready to answer the call of her Saviour.
