«There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a feeble folk, yet they make their homes in the crags; the locusts have no king, yet they all advance in ranks; the spider skillfully grasps with its hands, and it is in kings’ palaces» (Proverbs 30:24-28).
WISDOM
Solomon was a great student of nature. He was fascinated by animal behavior and learned wonderful lessons from them. In today’s verse he reminds us how much there is to learn from four small animals:
- Solomon says they are remarkable animals because they know how to get ready for hard times. They store food in the summer in order to have food in winter. They don’t wait until they’re in a rush and going through a hard time, but rather prepare for it in advance. It’s so important to know how to anticipate problems! There are things in a student’s life that are inevitable, such as exams. Therefore, you have to prepare for those situations by studying as you should. Why wait until things get complicated?
- They’re animals that don’t appear to be great, but they build their homes in the safest places. Your name or intellect are not as important in life as being able to make wise decisions. In Ecclesiastes 9:11, Solomon says that «the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill.»
- They’re really able to govern themselves and work as a team, despite not having a leader. That’s called discipline. «The object of discipline is the training of the child for self-government—Child Guidance, ch. 41, p. 223. Achieve discipline! les a very important virtue to succeed in life.
- They’re very fragile animals, even a child can catch them in their hands, but they’re able to invade kings’ palaces. Solomon reminds us that we shouldn’t focus on seeming disadvantages we’ve been born with in this world. We all have advantages and opportunities which, if we know how to make the best of them, can give us great satisfaction in our brief passage through this world.
