«The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way, but the folly of fools is deceit» (Proverbs 14:8).
WISDOM
The First Commandment says: «You shall have no other gods before Me.» That’s an affirmation of the spiritual nature of human beings. We were all born with the seed of belief in our hearts. Skepticism is foreign to men. The First Commandment reminds us that, if we don’t worship God, our own need to believe will lead us to honor something we grant sacred virtues to, be it an object, a living being or an idea. But in history, there has never been a people who hasn’t had religious tendencies.
So then what happens with the rampant atheism we see in our days? Actually, what is understood to be atheism today is nothing less than a critical reaction to radical stances of Christianity itself. It doesn’t even have tenets that draw people to the attractiveness of its doctrines, but its great strength has rather lain in criticizing and questioning unfortunate incidents in which Christian people and leaders were involved, as well as fiercely attacking some answers presented by representatives of the Christian faith. That is, atheism’s success has depended on the intolerant and unfortunate attitudes of Christianity.
The truth is it’s impossible to eliminate the desire to believe from human minds. Religious faith today has moved from one area to another. You might not find so many people in churches, but that doesn’t mean they’re unbelievers, atheists or agnostics. Instead it seems they’ve joined one of the new forms of religion, such as for instance, sporting or musical events. Religiousness remains steadfast in people’s minds, although maybe in ways we would never have imagined.
Believing is part of human nature. Even atheists need faith to believe their tenets. Actually, a lot of faith is necessary to defend its claims. It’s a great privilege to believe in God. It’s a comfort in a world full of confusion and cruelty. There are many reasons to believe in God and it’s important to discover them personally. But one of the best reasons is that having faith in God gives your life direction, just as this morning’s verse says, and it allows you to acknowledge the purpose for which the Lord has brought you into this world.
I invite you today to make room for the God of the universe in your life. Decide to trust the heavenly Father and your life will start going in a new direction.
