«You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you» (Isaiah 26:3, NIV).
TAMAE WATANABE, from Japan, broke two world records, each as difficult as the next. The first one was in 2002, when she was 63 years old: she became the oldest woman to climb Mount Everest. Ten years later, when she was 73, she broke her own record, becoming again the oldest woman to climb to the top of Everest. As you know, many people try it (and at a much younger age), but few manage to reach the summit. No doubt, Tamae is a woman of firm character. I can imagine the number of times she would have liked to give up in both attempts, perhaps afflicted by pain, fatigue, or the low temperatures. However, she did not give up; she trusted that she could do it, and did she ever! Congratulations, Tamae!
What is the mountain in your life that you want to climb? Does it perhaps have to do with your economic situation? Is it finishing your university studies or the formation of your children’s character? Or does it have to do with a difficult marriage that you do not know how to save? Surely the doubts, fear, or uncertainty have made you want to give up on your attempts more than once, but if you keep your trust in the Lord, He will keep you in peace.
A Christian woman always prayed for her husband, who was being unfaithful and had stopped going to church for that reason; it seemed that his home was no longer important to him. She wanted to save her marriage and was suffering tremendously because of the lifestyle of the man she loved. However, she remained firm in her decision to fight for him and to pray to God for Him to resolve her situation. One day, I ran into her and her happiness could be seen on her face.
«What has happened in your life that you look so happy?’ I asked her.
«Well, I never stopped praying for my husband.
«That strength of character and that unbreakable faith in God that she manifested allowed her to restore her home, forgive, and change the life of her family for the better. Her own vision of life changed forever. She had found the peace that only God gives to those who trust in Him.
He will keep you in peace if you maintain a firm character and trust fully in God. Problems come and go; God’s peace remains.
