PURE GOLD

l will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold» (Zechariah 13:9, NLT).

THE PROCESS undergone by gold before it becomes the ingot (bar) that we know is burdensome and complicated. Explained by someone who is not, of course, an expert in the matter, it is more or less like this: First, money is invested in workers and machinery—drills, dynamite, shovels, jack, hammers, gondola cars, equipment to break the stones, and so on. Once the gold has been extracted from the mine and broken up, it is put into machines with steel balls that change it into dust, and water is added by means of special equipment. After it has been mixed, it goes into tanks and cyanide is added. Then it is sent to the flotation plant, where container cells allow for the separation of the soil and the ground rock that is floating in the froth. The froth is then sent to the foundry.

The froth is collected and placed in canvas bags to be compacted and solidified by means of pressure; then the moisture is taken away and what is left is placed in molds inside ovens for smelting. By using chemicals and electricity, the slabs are changed into crystals of gold and silver, put into other electrical ovens, and then deposited in ingot molds that revolve around the oven. Once that process is completed, the ingots of gold are ready.

Job, one of the most tested men of the Bible, prayed in this way: ‘And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold» (Job 23:10, NLT). The great patriarch was able to understand in his own flesh that this difficult, exhaustive, costly, and detailed process of trial that God Himself allows us to experience refines us as if we were gold; that is, it produces in us the sanctification and purification of thoughts, words, and actions.

Dear friend, God is working in you to refine you in such a way that you become gold for His honor and glory. While this difficult and complicated process continues, remain calm. Allow God to work in you, to try you as gold is tried. Because «only Christ can cleanse the soul temple. But He will not force an entrance…. ‘He will subdue our iniquities; and Thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea’ (2 Corinthians 6: 16; Micah 7:19).

His presence will cleanse and sanctify the soul» (White, The Desire of Ages, ch. 16, p. 161).»
